The tot’s homeless parents had been selling flowers nearby and had been sleeping there with the girl overnight. The family is now being supported
A newborn girl has been rescued after being spotted by a Good Samaritan as she was seen sleeping alone inside a drainage pipe.
The one-month-old infant was seen lying on a makeshift bed made of carton and cloth under a bridge in Laguna province, in the Phillipines.
Concerned passerby Jefferson Nazareno, who was on his way home when he saw the baby, told his friends about the incident and reported it to local officials who went to the area.
Officers from the Calamba Public Order and Safety Office arrived to rescue the baby and searched for her desperate parents who were found selling flower garlands on a nearby road.
Mr Nazareno said: “I noticed that there seemed to be someone at the mouth of the pipe.
“At first, I thought it was just a doll but when I passed by I saw that it really was a child. That’s why I took the photo.”
The baby’s parents, as well as the other homeless youngsters living under the bridge, were taken to a local social welfare facility where they were fed.
Social workers say the girl’s mother told them they had been sleeping inside the pipe because they did not have a house.
However, CCPSO chief Jeff Rodriguez said the family would need to be rescued as their living conditions were dangerous.
He said: ‘It was worrying because the child was in a drainage pipe alone and could have been swept away by a downpour.”
The baby and her parents are now under the care of the social welfare department while CPSO officers closed off the underside of the bridge to prevent attracting homeless people from settling in the area.
